Sparkling wine in the UK has had to deal with a number of challenges in the past year. With the remarkable renaissance of the gin category in full swing, there is an increasing body of evidence to suggest that gin and tonic is encroaching on the aperitif / relaxing drink occasion that sparkling wine has very successfully dominated over the past few years. This has been demonstrated with the first year-on-year decrease in sparkling wine volumes, down 1% from 2017 to 2018. After large increases in recent years, our findings suggests that the sparkling wine category may be reaching a plateau.
This report discusses the UK sparkling wine market and the consumers within it. We analyse their consumption behaviour and perception, purchase behaviours and sparkling wine attitudes and involvement. In addition, we take a look at sparkling wine brand health and the competition between English sparkling wine, Champagne, Cava and Prosecco.
