Gerard Basset OBE, MW, MS — Associate Director - On-trade

Gerard Basset is arguably the world’s most decorated and influential thinker about wine service in a hospitality environment. A lifetime spent honing the theory and practice of wine service has yielded an unprecedented array of industry accolades: Master of Wine, Master Sommelier, an MBA from the Bordeaux Ecole de Management, and – most recently – Best Sommelier in the World at the 2010 World Sommelier Championships in Chile. Somehow Gerard has managed to combine these achievements with a successful career as an entrepreneur and author. In the early 1990s he co-founded the Hotel du Vin chain and, having sold the business for £70 million to the Malmaison Group in 2006, has gone on to start another, the Hotel Terravina, which has garnered numerous awards since opening in 2008.
Gerard has published a book, “The Wine Experience”, serves as director of the Academy of Food and Wine Service and the Court of Master Sommeliers, and chairs the judging panel for the French category at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
